Maintenance Equipment Operator II
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbents operate heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, riding mowers, front end loaders, backhoe, bulldozers, graders, compactors, snow removal equipment, chippers and other pieces of mobile equipment for road and grounds maintenance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Roads and Grounds Supervisor in support of Construction and Facilities Management Officer’s overarching supervision. Incumbent periodically completes other tasks as assigned from the Construction and Facilities Management Officer & State Quartermaster in direct support of agency needs.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Performs preventative maintenance checks and services on assigned equipment
2. Performs minor equipment repairs and mechanical adjustments and refers more significant maintenance problems to supervisor for resolution.
3. Uses assigned equipment to construct maintain both improved and unimproved roads and trails.
4. Uses assigned equipment for facility grounds maintenance to include grounds keeping, snow removal, road maintenance, asphalt patching, excavation for utility service connections, street sweeping etc.
5. Uses hand operated power equipment and hand tools when heavy equipment is not required. Such equipment includes chainsaws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, trenchers and concrete saws.
6. Transports and handle bulk materials within the facility complex using equipment including but not limited to, trucks, loaders, skid steers, and trailers.
7. Maintains records and prepares reports such as work vehicle use, logs, accidents repairs and maintenance.
8. Completes other” duties as assigned by the Facility Manager on behalf of the Construction and Facilities Management Officer.
9. May be required to work in response to snowstorms or other emergency events.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE
1.Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power -operated equipment used in excavating, grading, and related construction activities.
2.Knowledge of the principles and practices of facility grounds maintenance.
3.Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures relative to heavy equipment and vehicles.
4.Knowledge of the types and uses of snow removal equipment.
5.Knowledge of the types and uses of hand power tools.
6.Knowledge of the safety practices used for facility construction projects.
7.Knowledge of the types and uses of materials and equipment used for facility construction projects.
8.Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment and land maintenance equipment
9.Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints and drawings
10.Ability to gather and organize information according to established procedures
11.Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
12.Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people.
13.Ability to adapt to varying work situations and adjust to meet emergency or changing program or production requirements
14.Ability to work independently
15.Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
16. Applicants must hold a current Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
17. Applicants must hold a valid Class 2A Hoisting Equipment Operators License issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB (List knowledges, skills, abilities)
1. Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit.
2. Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms.

Special Requirements:
I. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver’s License (CDL).
II. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C Equipment Operator’s License issued by the Department of Public Safety.
