Perfect Weather and Record Breaking Attendance at
43rd Annual Bourne Scallop Fest
Buzzards Bay Park

BOURNE – Clear skies and plenty of people attended the 43rd Annual Bourne Scallop Fest on September 21, 22, 23.  Three times awarded a Top 100 Event in North America by the American Bus Association reflects the value people receive at the Fest.

Marie Oliva, President & CEO, stated: “Groups from buses, boats, and trains were up substantially this year, including overall attendance.  Over 650 volunteers helped man the Fest; however by mid-day Saturday, many were gracious enough to work double and triple shifts because it was consistently busy hour after hour. By the time the Fest was over Sunday night, we could have used 100+ more volunteers to keep up with the crowd.  That hasn’t happened since I’ve been running the Fest for 13 years! “

Local restaurant vendors did a fantastic business with some of them having to reorder more food and supplies.  The vendors in the Arts and Craft Show did consistently well throughout the weekend, with some mentioning this was their best year so far.

John LaFlamme, Scallop Fest Task Force Chair and Coca Cola Bottling Company Sponsor emphasized, “The weekend was a remarkable success.  The Chamber also reached out to many area businesses to make sure they could benefit from the 55,000+ plus people traveling through the region and the county to attend the Fest. It’s truly about working with the community.”

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office under the leadership of Sheriff Jim Cummings, provides work crews to build up the grounds for several days prior to the Fest, only to take it all down after it’s over.  Jim Cummngs has volunteered at Fest for the past ten years, along with Lt. Brait and many other employees.

Barnstable Patrol Officer Steve O’Brien began opening ceremonies by singing the National Anthem.  Over 30 dignitaries attended including Senate President Therese Murray, the region’s legislative delegation, local Selectmen and officials from Bourne, Sandwich and Wareham, and business sponsors.

We graciously thank over 40 Business Sponsors for this unprecedented event:
