The Cape Cod Region Chamber of Commerce is very happy to announce Cape Rail, Inc., parent company for Massachusetts Coastal Railroad and Cape Cod Central Railroad as the recipient of the 2010 Business of the Year Award.

Cape Rail, Inc., headquartered in Hyannis , operates both the energy train and award-winning dinner train.  They operate all of the rail lines in Southeastern Massachusetts and will soon operate (mid-June) all of the rail lines in the south coast region as well (New Bedford and Fall River), bringing the total rail lines operated to nearly 100 miles.  With offices in Hyannis , Buzzards Bay and Wareham , they employ between 80 and 100 employees.

Cape Cod Central Railroad contributes significantly to the local tourism industry and overall quality of our region.  They have been a large part of our Annual Scallop Fest bringing thousands of patrons into Buzzards Bay each September.  Last year the Buzzards Bay station where the Chamber’s Business Office & Visitor Center are located was added to the regular departure schedule for the dinner & family fun trains.

Mass Coastal’s freight rail service contributes to the local economic engine and allows 20 southeastern Mass industries to make products and provide services and jobs more efficiently.  Mass Coastal, which also operates the energy train, strives to maintain an environmentally conscious and community focused presence in the fragile ecosystems and historic communities of southeastern Massachusetts .  One example is that the Energy Train removes over 12,000 truck trips per year from the Cape’s roads and the 2 Cape Cod Canal highway bridges.

John F. Kennedy, President, CEO & Partner of Cape Rail, Inc. has twenty seven years of hands-on ownership, operation, management and outreach with his various railroad companies.  He has tirelessly advocated for passenger rail service to Bourne, Sandwich & Wareham and received widespread support for his creative and unique proposal for train service from Sandwich to the Lakeville MBTA station.
