Proposed Closure of EXIT 1 at the Sagamore Bridge

Marie Oliva, President & CEO, of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce, is now serving on the newly formed Canal Area Regional Traffic Task Force, commissioned by Congressman Delahunt and created by Mass DOT Secretary Jeffrey Mullan. The Task Force will look at short and long term transportation needs related to both the Sagamore and Bourne bridges.

One of the mitigating measures advocated by the Cape Cod Chamber is to close Exit #1 by the Christmas Tree Shop during construction on the Sagamore Bridge.  Closing this exit would divert local traffic from Sandwich, Sagamore, and Mashpee forcing people to Rt. 6A leading to the Bourne Bridge, 20+ miles out of their way. This gridlock would seriously affect businesses, residents, and school buses.

Shifting traffic to feeder roads leading to the Bourne Bridge is not the answer. Motorists will soon find that the alternate routes they take are just as backed up as the main highway. No one wins.

The Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber, Town Administrators, Police Chiefs, and Fire Chiefs in Bourne and Sandwich are opposed to this idea. The goal of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber is to collaborate with others on the Task Force to come up with workable measures that best serve everyone on Cape Cod.
